Summarizing is a skill used in both oral and written communication that restates the topic sentence or main idea and key supporting points that the writer or speaker believes critical to be remembered. Summarizing is a strategy that is critical to comprehension of all content information. It is a basic skill essential for higher level thinking. Summarizing skills are taught at all grade levels, becoming more complex in middle school and high school. For students in grades 3 – 5, the focus is on identifying the main idea and supporting details of information, as well as differentiating between the two concepts.

Hi! My name is Cindy Casillas. I have been with the Learning Bridges team since 2003. I am an instructor for many different courses, and Classroom Management is my favorite. It has been a fun and rewarding experience. I learn so much from the participants and love the interaction between educators. Many alternative licensure programs are being flocked by career changers who are dissatisfied with their work or who have been laid off. They are engaged in intensive summer training to prepare them for teaching positions this fall. About one-third of all first year teachers in many states are certified through alternative licensure programs. What is your experience with alternative licensure programs, and how are career changers supported in your schools? Should these fast-track licensure programs be expanded to provide more teachers in areas in which there are severe teacher shortages, such as in urban schools, special education, mathematics, and science?
